FLOODS IN HEYTESBURY AND KNOOK JANUARY 2014

A number of homes in Heytesbury are classified as being at risk of flooding by the EA. These all have river frontages. The area received two flood warnings one for groundwater runoff from Salisbury plain and one for the Wylye river. Both were pertinent as three issues arose in the Village, one due to the plain runoff, one due to the river's water level and one due to road and field runoff.

The Wylye runs West to East just to the south of Heytesbury and a winterbourne runs North to South from Salisbury plain to the Wylye East of Heytesbury. It empties into the Wylye just south of Slaters farm.

Firemen cool down at Heytesbury Spectacular 2013

The Heytesbury School Parents Association needed to raise money for new school laptops and decided this year not to do lots of little fundraisers but to GO LARGE and all out with a Summer Spectacular. Many meetings were held in The Red Lion to discuss what they wanted to do and a vintage themed Summer Fete was soon agreed.

They ran a sponsored event and the army kindly lent them inflatable paintball targets which the children had great fun playing on. The HSPA ran Face Painting, Bric a Brac, Second Hand Books, Tombola and Raffle with amazing prizes being donated including the 1st prize of a Gyrocopter flight experience at the Old Sarum airfield which was won by a local parish councillor (watch this space for photos) other fun events such as Splat The Rat and The Stocks amused the crowds. Some locals displayed a range of vintage vehicles and a vintage cream tea tent was provided courtesy of Roadhog Caterers, and beer tent courtesy of The Red Lion, the BBQ also proved to be very popular. The Ice cream van did a roaring trade and the firemen visited with one of their engines.

On top of this there were many stall holders with some fabulous wares to sell. The children put on 2 performances one was the choir who sang beautifully and the other was a dance they performed at the Bath dance festival, they also had a horse demonstrating Pirelli in the arena. Robert Pulvertaft from Woodside Events provided the PA and banter! The Spectacular was topped off with live music by 10 Thousand Ghosts from London. July 6th 2013 was a day to remember not only for the warmth of the back to back sunshine but also the warmth of generosity of the people who came along at 12pm and kept on coming all day to support the school, so far they have raised £2,500 and are absolutely astounded.

Here's looking forward to the next one.

Heytesbury Play Area  Opening

Heytesbury Youngsters receive an early Christmas present with the completion of their play area improvements thanks to a £15,500 Landfill Communities Fund (LCF) grant from the Hills Group through Community First.

This project started over two years ago with the parish council’s application to the Playbuilder Grant Scheme to improve the play area for the 100 or so children, although the grant was unsuccessful they looked at other ways to fund a project like this and are very pleased that the community has come together and raised over £32,000 to complete the project in time for Christmas.

Work started in May of this year after donations from the Parish Council, Selwood Housing, Heytesbury Hedgehogs Pre-School, Heytesbury Young Persons Organisation (Hypo) and a grant from the Warminster Area Board were secured.

The initial work saw the installation of a challenging 60m Timber Trail, an 8m high unpredictable basketball called the Fireball, and two pieces of outdoor fitness equipment suitable for all ages. This alone was a great improvement on the aged swings and roundabout!

After third-party contributions from three local businessmen Richard Guy of The Real Meat Company, Jack Waters of J&G Vehicle Repairs and Matthew Lippinton of The Sound Post were generously donated, the LCF grant from the Hills Group was secured, and that meant that a Multi – Level Play Tower with Climbing Wall and Helter Skelter style slide could be added providing an exciting dimension to play in the village.

Chair of Heytesbury, Imber and Knook Parish Council Ann Perry wished to thank all those who have generously contributed to this project. Children and their families can now escape to an environment that is safe, fun and friendly to enjoy, and also enables young and young at heart to play and exercise together. This is a marvellous achievement for the village and its residents.

Heytesbury Bonfire Extravaganza 2013

There has been a tradition in Heytesbury of a well-attended village bonfire, soon after the Heytesbury bypass was completed in the 1980’s villagers decided to celebrate the occasion by parading Guy Fawkes through the now quiet village High Street from the 17th century Gaol to the Cricket field where he is unceremoniously set ablaze on a roaring fire.

Each year the children of the village make the Guy and Lock him up several days before the event, on the nearest Friday to 5th November the residents take the rascal from the Gaol by candlelight and carry him with support from  local musicians to his fiery fate now held in the garden of The Red Lion.

The residents revelled in £1,600 of fireworks paid for by village fundraising events and donations for which the bonfire committee are grateful, BBQ and beverages were served by the Red Lion.
